KISUMU, 25TH APRIL 2018: The FORD Foundation has supported the Lake Region Economic Bloc with a sum of Sh. 18 million towards strengthening the bloc. The Bloc chairman Wycliffe Oparanya made the announcement during a breakfast meeting in Kisumu attended by all the 14 Governors representing the bloc.
Oparanya says the funding will help in operationalizing the pillar committees of the Lake Region Economic Bloc and the Secretariat.
"The FORD Foundation's leadership for this region has given us Sh. 18 million to strengthen the secretariat as they move on to organizing more funding for us."
He says that FORD Foundation has been a critical partner in their integration processes and was critical in helping them develop their economic blue print.
Oparanya who is the Kakemega Governor and the host of the 5th annual Devolution Donference says the Bloc will leverage economies of scale in the Lake Region.
FORD Foundation Regional Director Maurice Makoloo says they will continue supporting the Bloc to set up a fully fledged secretariat.
Makoloo says the support will see the inclusion of the civil society groups and other non state actors in the programs.
"We have been working with the bloc since 2014 and have noticed both the strides and challenges they have faced and this donation is meant to strengthen the secretariat so that it can effectively engage all the other stakeholders like county assemblies, civil society and the general public."
He announced that the Foundation has in the past since 2014 given out Sh. 25 million to the Bloc and will continue to offer financial assistance.
