NAIROBI 9th Nov. 2017: The opposition coalition NASA is expected to hold fresh demos across the country from Friday to agitate for a fresh presidential elections and electoral reforms.
Nairobi lawyer and ODM politician Edwin Sifuna has written to Nairobi County Police Commandant Japheth Koome informing him of their intent and asking them to provide the demonstrators with security.
“You are hereby notified of the same and requested to provide security during the said procession/demonstration to ensure criminal elements do not take advantage to harm protesters, the public or any property.”
Previous NASA-led demos in Nairobi and Kisumu were marred with scenes of violence leading to several deaths as police used live ammunition to pacify the protesters.
In his letter, Sifuna says that theirs will be a peaceful demonstration and asked that the police should not attempt to stand in their way. Last month Interior CS Fred Matiangi banned demos in the central business districts of major towns across the country but the directive was quashed by a court order.
Similar notices are expected to be delivered to county police commanders across the country today.
The demos come in the wake of fresh calls by the opposition coalition's leader Raila Odinga for the formation of an interim transition government that will guarantee a transparent elections in six months. The call has been rubbished by jubilee legislators even though President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto are yet to comment on it.
